An automatic pH controller is a system that independently and automatically doses the pool to keep pH at optimal levels, using liquid pH correctors (pH minus or pH plus).
These units analyse the water and, as soon as they detect that the pH is out of range, dose the liquid corrector until the balance point is restored. That point can vary depending on the characteristics of the pool (temperature, use, location, type of water, etc.).
The units used in public or communal pools can usually both raise and lower the water’s pH. By contrast, the automatic pH dosers typically used in private pools usually work in one direction only (raise or lower). In that case, if you need to change direction, it has to be done manually on the unit: if the doser is set to “pH plus” and the pH is too high, you need to switch it to “pH minus” to get the right readings. That is, as long as the unit allows it, because some automatic pH controllers on the market only offer one of the two functions.
WHY USE AN AUTOMATIC PH SYSTEM?
The main reason to use an automatic pH controller is convenience: it spares you the manual checks usually needed in private pools. A unit takes care of the regulation automatically, so you can focus on enjoying your pool rather than maintaining it.
As well as in pools disinfected with chemical products, they are increasingly used in pools with salt chlorination. That way the owner adds automatic pH control to the convenience that an automatic salt chlorinator already provides.
It is true that in pools with salt electrolysis the pH tends to rise faster and more often than with chemicals, so an automatic controller is highly recommended.
Likewise, since a salt chlorination system mainly causes the pH to rise, units with both functions (lowering and raising pH) are usually unnecessary. A pH-minus function is generally enough, raising the pH manually on the odd occasion it is needed.
